You will find Montréal an extremely accommodating destination with over 23,000 rooms to suit every taste and every pocketbook. The Greater Montréal area can offer comfortable, convenient accommodation for groups of any size in hotels, motels, apartment hotels, bed and breakfast homes, college dormitories, campgrounds and resorts. The majority of these establishments are located in the central core, convenient to the subway system. Many are within a short walk of the major convention sites; or, in the case of some of our leading hotels, under the same roof!

The Québec government is responsible for regulating and supervising hotel establishments and campgrounds, as well as issuing permits. Non-Canadian residents can receive a cash rebate of the goods and services tax (GST) and the provincial sales tax (PST) on short-term accommodation and some purchases.

TRANSPORTATION

EASY ACCESS EVERY WHICH WAY

Montréal is less than a day's drive or a one to two-hour flight from most major cities in the Northeastern part of the North American continent. Our two airports offer direct flights and non-stop flights to over 130 destinations around the world. Since September 15, 1997, Dorval Airport — 18 kilometres west of downtown Montréal — handles regular scheduled flights while 58 kilometres north of the city's downtown core, Mirabel Airport accommodates charter air traffic as well as all cargo flights.

Buses, limousines and taxis provide quick, efficient shuttle service between the airports, the major hotels and the City Centre Air Terminal. Via Rail offers regular service to Eastern and Western Canada. Amtrak provides daily service to New York and Washington. Montréal is one of the world's main inland seaports. Elegant cruiseships and heavy freighters from 200 ports on 5 continents visit our well-equipped, modern harbour.

GETTING AROUND TOWN

Clean, safe, and comfortable, the underground subway system we call the METRO is an ideal, economical way to reach many of Greater Montréal's hotels and attractions. Highly popular with Montrealers, it is also an efficient and environmentally responsible means of commuting. Conventioneers will be happy to know that special one or three-day passes public transit are available.


SHOPPING

Montréal's reputation as a major international fashion and shopping centre is well established. With major department stores and countless boutiques lining the city's streets and Underground City, Montréal offers the most beautiful creations by the best-known names on the local, national and international fashion scene.

At the intersection of Peel and Ste. Catherine Streets, the very pulse of the downtown sector can be felt. The city's main shopping artery runs along Ste. Catherine Street and the elegance of its boutiques, department stores and shopping complexes clearly attest to Montréal's reputation as a fashion capital.

A 29-kilometre network of underground passageways, its underground city is an original response to Montréal weather conditions. Inaugurated during the sixties, Montréal's underground city provides access to 1,700 boutiques, department stores, restaurants, movie houses, theatres and exhibition halls as well as 7 major hotels, 1,615 housing units, thousands of offices, etc. In addition there is always a metro station nearby.

Montréal is synonymous with water, the mountain, and exceptional parks and green spaces. An outdoor activity paradise throughout four very distinctive seasons. For yachters and other water sports enthusiasts, it offers superb facilities for sailing, kayaking, rafting, swimming and more. Hundreds of kilometres of paths designed for biking, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, hiking and wildlife observation await visitors. Montréal offers an incomparable range of urban and outdoor sports and activities, in the heat of the summer and throughout invigorating winter months. It is hardly surprising that tens of thousands of enthusiasts flock to the city each year to attend such major events as the Tour de l'Île and the Festival de la Santé. Montréal invites you to come out and play year round!

 CYCLING

Montréal, a cycling city all around

Even if you are in town for only a few hours, you can't help but notice how much Montrealers love cycling and how well Montréal accommodates them. "Vélomag Pédaler Montréal et ses environs", a guide to cycling, reports that nearly 350 kilometres of bicycle paths crisscross the island. Montréal also has a network of specialized bike shops offering hourly and daily bicycle rental.

The city does not end on the island, though. Montréal's urban bicycle paths are connected to suburban paths via bridges, a ferry service, and the subway system during off-peak periods. On the South Shore, cyclists can travel through Montérégie on the Route Verte, a 3500-kilometre province-wide cycling path that will be completed by 2005.

Montréal, host of the Tour de l'Île

Every year on the first Sunday in June, the world's largest gathering of cyclists (according to the Guiness Book of World Records), the Tour de l'Île de Montréal, brings together some 45,000 cyclists who take part in a 70-kilometre race on a route that is closed to automobile traffic. Urban madness is transformed into an island oasis in a stunning moment of grace.

The Tour has been persistently successful and in preparation for the 15th annual event, organizers have planned a children's race and a night race. In 1999, the Tour de l'Île is organizing its activities as part of the "Féria du vélo de Montréal," a week of festivities to spark cycling fever, a unique event in North America..

The Maison des cyclistes in the heart of the city

A strikingly original example of the biking mania that has taken hold of Montrealers, the Maison des cyclistes (cyclists' home) is a centre for events designed for cyclists unlike anything else in North America. It contains the Bicicletta café and an adjoining boutique, offering an extensive range of guides and maps for cyclists.
