Abstract :
One of the main features of a computer power supply is its high availability for the user. The author shows how power supply
design is made to comply with this requirement. The power supply also has to comply with international standards especially
for safety and electromagnetic compatibility. Permanent and transient line current waveforms are analysed as well as their
consequences for upstream equipment such as : line distribution wires, protection techniques, and UPS sizing. Future
developments like high power factor preregulator and distributed power are also analyzed.
