ABSTRACT :
The authors in this paper propose a new control strategy for active power conditioner connected to a three balanced or
unbalanced power network with sinusoidal or non sinusoidal means voltages. A new definition of residual instantaneous
active and reactive power based on the alpha/beta transformation of instantaneous voltages and currents of the AC power
system are introduced to extract the current harmonic references to control the power conditioner. The introduction of these
new components m the control algorithm of the active conditioner are investigated and applied to a power system under
non-symmetrical and non-sinusoidal mains conditions. Simulation has been performed to validate the new control methodology
and showed that the main advantage of this control method is that the mains line currents constitute always a balanced
sinusoidal system operating with a non symmetrical mains voltage sources. The introduction of these new residual power
components leads also to the definition of an extended THD power factor as an convenient measure to evaluate the power and
to characterise non sinusoidal and aperiodic currents.
