Abstract :
The principal sources of renewable energy, wind and solar, have been harnessed through research and
development to become a commercial source of electrical power. In striving to improve the performance of
the conversion process the developers have turned to power electronics to solve their problems. The need and
the appropriate solutions have coincided with the arrival of new devices such as the IGBT and new circuit
topologies such as the reversible-rectifier. This new application area is presenting exciting opportunities for
the power electronics engineer. The author discusses the characteristics of wind turbines and small battery
charging wind turbines. Wind turbine stand alone and grid connected operation is discussed. the author then
discusses power converter and inverter technology for synchronous generators, cage induction generators,
slip ring induction generators, and integrated wind-diesel systems. The author then discusses PV cell
characteristics and power conversion schemes.
