Abstract :
Stand-alone renewable energy power systems are becoming a viable and widespread option for supplying
small amounts of power. Their general function is to charge secondary batteries that can deliver power as
required. Presented in the paper is the flyback power converter for use in battery charging. The design and
operation of the flyback power converter are discussed and its unique converter characteristics that make it
possible to charge batteries from a wide range of input voltages, above and below the nominal battery voltage.
A circuit is presented with a simple but effective control system, which ensures maximum power transfer up
to the maximum peak operational current. An initial circuit model was investigated to determine suitable
circuit parameters from which a prototype was built. A discussion on the performance and efficiency of the
prototype will be given.
