Abstract :
In the last ten years advances in device technology and circuit
design have raised the rated frequency of static power inverters up
to several hundred kHz. The main problem is which configuration of
inverter and which power semiconductor switch will be the most
suitable at these levels of frequency. The various possibilities are
briefly characterized and their further development trends are
outlined. The switching performance of dual-thyristor converters
makes them ideally suited for advanced power supply designs.
Finally, a power MOSFET converter in dual-thyristor mode is
demonstrated that operates efficiently in a range of 270 kHz to
about 425 kHz. The experimental results have proven the practical
feasibility of dual-thyristor devices for induction heating.
