APEC Returns To Dallas
Sunday, October 21, 2001
For General Release
Larry Gilbert, Publicity Chair

APEC 2002 will be returning to the Adams Mark Hotel in Dallas, TX. The Conference will start (with Professional Education Seminars) on Sunday, March 10th and will conclude on Thursday, March 14th.

We are family. From Baltimore to Boston, and Dallas to LA, we have been there in good times and bad times. Who are we? For sixteen consecutive years we have participated in the Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC) as authors of Technical Session papers. We come together once each year with a single goal. To freely share our research, experience and knowledge of "applied power electronics." This year we will travel from Austria, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, PR China, the Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Taiwan to continue to serve our industry by presenting papers at APEC. Forty-five percent (45%) of the papers being presented at APEC 2002 will be from these non-USA colleagues, confirming that ours is an international Conference. Unlike recent news coverage, our coalition is truly non political and non biased, as it should be.

We were undaunted by "Desert Storm" in 1991, and "El Niño" in 1998, and will not let the tragic events of 9-11-01 hamper our determination to, once again, put on a "world class" program.

Unlike our last visit to the Adams Mark in Dallas, you will not find our attendees having their photos taken on a live bull inside the ballroom, so I would suggest that you leave your cowboy boots and chaps at home.

For APEC 2002 the Program Committee selected 181 of the 339 Technical Session abstracts received. These will be presented in 26 Technical Sessions commencing on Monday afternoon. Sessions for APEC 2002 will include papers on DC/DC Converters, Manufacturing, Marketing, Motor Drives, EMI, PFC, VRM's, Lamp Ballast's, Utility Interface, UPS, Modeling and Simulation to Rectifier and Control Circuits.

Being accepted as an APEC Technical Session author, or being selected to conduct a Professional Education Seminar, is not an easy task. Due to limited slots and timing we set the bar very high as evidenced by the fact that only 50% of all submissions are accepted for the Conference. The good news is that this world renown program has a long list of loyal applicants to draw from as we continue to focus on our Mission to offer the highest caliber of applied power electronics education for each and every attendee.

In comparing the 15 Professional Education Seminars for 2002 vs 2001 only 3 (teams) from 2001 will once again present Seminars. This illustrates the depth of our authors as well as our commitment to provide new topics of interest. It also points out that no one is automatically accepted solely due to his or her credentials or prior participation.

As the emerging 42 volt next generation automotive electrical power systems are deployed, we are including a (co-authored) Seminar on this topic that will include John Miller, representing the Ford Corp. In addition, a debate on the 42V automotive bus will be one of our three interactive RAP Sessions being held on Tuesday evening. The other Professional Education Seminars will focus on Motor Drives, PFC, DC/DC Converters, Solar/Alternative Energy, EMI, Packaging and Thermal Management, HALT/HASS, optimizing semiconductors, and power supply design.

In addition to the 42 V bus, the other two RAP Sessions will deal with ASICS and contract manufacturing. This is the one opportunity whereby the attendee can challenge the experts on the concepts being debated.

Rounding out our program will be 12 exhibitor Education Seminars, the 16th annual Micro Mouse competition, and the Wednesday evening banquet which will be held at the Dallas World Aquarium.

We will also have an Exhibition Hall with up to 148 booths where you can interact with factory direct experts on their latest product offerings while enjoying our catered reception on Monday evening. We will also be conducting another attendee drawing in the Exhibit Hall on Tuesday evening where some lucky individuals will carry home one of four or five gifts which just might contain a camcorder, digital camera, GPS system or a DVD. All winners will need to be present in the Exhibit Hall to qualify.

For additional information, including on-line registration, please check out our web site www.apec-conf.org or contact the APEC office at 202-973-8664.

On behalf of the entire Conference Committee let me express our gratitude for your prior participation and extend a warm welcome to APEC 2002. We thank you for your patronage of the Conference and look forward to greeting you in Dallas.
