Abstract :
Experiments on coarse-grained and brittle ceramic materials such as
cordierite and alumina-mullite showed that use of the ultrasonic pulse
method proved efficient for evaluation of their capacity for thermal
damage even with low ultrasonic frequencies in the range from 20 to 150
kHz.When evaluating thermal damage in dense fine-grained materials, more
sensitive methods are required.Positive results are obtained by an
ultrasonic spectral method where the variation in the spectrum of the
wideband ultrasonic pulse passed through the specimens before and after
the introduction of thermal damage is recorded. In this case there is no
information on the true size and location of thermal cracks. To solve this
problem it is efficient to use a fluorescent penetrant method. To determine
the level of thermal damage in ceramic materials the authors carried out
an analysis of the acoustic emission which accompanies the deformation and
fracture of specimens under static loading. For evaluation of the capacity
of alumina refractories for thermal damage, AE analysis was successfully
used when quenching specimens in a liquid coolant. 5 refs.
