About this Conference

This is a new conference offered by the United Engineering Foundation. Membrane technology is an important part of the separation technology. Its usage in the industry is growing due to its versatility and low-energy consumption as compared with other separation and purification processes, such as distillation and crystallization. Because of industrial needs and the advances in material science, many new membrane materials are being developed, which should make their related separation processes more efficient.

The conference is organized to address broadly the field of membranes and membrane processes. The technical program is divided into nine oral sessions and one poster session to cover different types of membranes as well as their respective separation processes. The program will highlight new developments in the field, as well as research opportunities for the future.

The conference will follow the established format of morning and evening sessions of oral presentations, accompanied by poster presentations. Industrial and academic experts on membrane technology are encouraged to participate and present their work.

This conference is co-sponsored by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the Separations Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the North American Membrane Society and the European Membrane Society.

United Engineering Foundation Conferences Fellowship Program
The United Engineering Foundation sponsors a Conference Fellowship Program. Applicants are limited to those currently active in engineering or related professions with a direct interest in the conference topic. They must be within ten years of their B.S. degree at the time their applications are submitted. The stipend is sufficient to cover the conference registration fee and on-site room and board. Transportation expenses are not included. Application information may be obtained from the WWW or by fax from the Foundation (1-212-591-7441) and must be submitted by July 13, 2001.

United Engineering Foundation Conferences Program
This conference is sponsored by the United Engineering Foundation. The Conferences Program was established in 1962 to provide an opportunity for the exploration of problems and issues of concern to engineering from many disciplines. The format of the conference provide morning and evening sessions in which major presentations are made. Available time is included during the afternoons for ad hoc meetings and informal discussions and is designed to enhance rapport among participants and promote dialogue on the developments of the meeting. We believe the conferences have been instrumental in generating ideas and disseminating information to a greater extent than is possible through more conventional forums. All participants are expected to contribute actively to the discussions.

Hotel and Travel Information

The "Il Ciocco" Hotel and Conference Center
The Il Ciocco Hotel and Conference Center is located in Castelvecchio Pascoli (near Barga), in the heart of Garfagnana, one of Tuscany's most enchanted valleys, in two thousand acres of natural park. The conference facilities are excellent and the hotel has 216 rooms, all air-conditioned, with bathroom and mini-bar. It is 40 km (26 miles) from Lucca, 60 km (39 miles) from Pisa, and 110 km (74 miles) from Florence. Located about 500 meters above sea level, the hotel overlooks the Serchio Valley and the Apuane Mountains. The hotel also offers an outdoor swimming pool, health club, 8 tennis courts (1.5 km from the hotel), soccer/football, horse riding, ping pong, billiards, basketball, volleyball, bocce, mountain bike trails, a disco, piano bar and games room.

Transportation to "Il Ciocco"
Transportation from the Pisa Airport to "Il Ciocco" is by the complimentary conference center bus or mini-coach that will leave Pisa Airport (baggage claim area) at 4:00 pm, Sunday October 14. Please plan to be in Pisa no later than 3:30 pm as there will be only one bus. It will first stop at the Airport at 4:00 pm and 15 minutes later be at the Train Station. Look for the Il Ciocco hostess carrying a sign. If you are arriving by train, wait outside the main entrance and look for the bus - it may stop across the street, depending on traffic.

There are daily direct flights to Pisa from London, Paris and Frankfurt. The railway station at Pisa is equally accessible as it is on the Tirrenia line where almost hourly Inter-City trains, among others, arrive from the South (Naples and Rome) and from northern Europe via Turin and Milan. There will also be a return bus to Pisa and Friday afternoon at 1:30 after the conference adjournment. If you plan a holiday in Italy, the hotel can help you book rooms at other hotels.

If you are coming by automobile, take Motorway A-11 until the exit for Lucca. The distance from Lucca to "Il Ciocco" is approximately 40 km on a scenic mountain road.

If you should arrive after the bus departs, your transportation options to Il Ciocco will be considerably more expensive and/or inconvenient. Be sure to book transportation will gets you to Pisa in the early afternoon. Should you arrive early, you can check your luggage at the train station and visit the Tower.

Conference Excursion
Two optional excursions to Barga and Lucca (and Pisa) are planned . There will be a sign-up sheet at the hotel registration desk for those who are interested in participating. The excursion fee (paid directly to the hotel) will cover rental of the bus. Any museum entrance fees will be extra. A boxed lunch will be provided. See List of Excursions (an adobe pdf file).

Day Trips for Guests
Il Ciocco typically offers a very reasonably priced day trip via van or coach to a local area of interest (e.g., Florence, Siena, Lucca) that may be of interest to guests of participants. Information regarding day-trips will be available at the hotel desk and at registration.
