Abstract :
The paper presents methods of optimisation of the reactors used in the DC link of indirect thyristor frequency converters
for induction heating systems. These reactors should keep direct current ripple below the assumed level, diminish backfeed
of inverter frequency components into the line and protect the rectifier under fault conditions (output short-circuits and
commutation failure). Computer simulation is used for calculations. The L=f(i) characteristics of the reactor are calculated,
which assure constant per unit value of current ripple within the whole range of the load (for constant value of direct
voltage). The damping of backed harmonics of inverter operating frequency is discussed, with special attention paid to line
side connected capacitor banks. It is demonstrated that DC link reactor and electronic overcurrent protection systems fully
protect inverter thyristors against short circuits.
