Abstract :
Discusses two basic thermal limitations which can lead to the
overloading and thus destruction of thyristors; the maximum
permissible junction temperature; and overheating. Examines and
discusses the types of overloads experienced and quotes the
definitions of them in official international standards terms. The
voltage drop in a thyristor during conduction and its behaviour
under overload conditions are explained. An assembly of apparatus of
testing thyristors under overload is illustrated by a line diagram
and the operational principle is explained. The results of a number
of destructive tests are given and the effects of repeated and
re-applied voltages are discussed. It is concluded that the most
valuable criteria concerning overloading are those associated with
the power dissipated and the law of thermal impedance variation with
current pulse duration. A detailed explanation of methods of
protection against overloads is given.
