Abstract :
Considers the criteria for the choice of diodes suitable for working
with transistors in power electronics. The design of fast blocking
diodes must be based on a compromise between the forward voltage
drop, the speed of charge recovery and the reverse voltage, which
are contradictory properties. In free-wheeling circuits, faster
diodes reduce the power losses in transistors. Soft recovery diodes
in rectifier circuits reduce voltage surges and parasitic
transients. The new Thomson-CSF Superswitch diodes retain the soft
recovery operation, allow 400 V rating and are twice as fast as the
earlier types.
