Abstract :
In automated equipment there is a need for switches,which control
various loads, relays, lamps, etc., employing logic signals. What
are the principle characteristics which are indispensable for this
type of switch? First and foremost that they should be
self-protecting, i.e. they should be able to withstand industrial
interference, short circuits, overvoltages and open circuit loads,
and earth connections. Furthermore they should be able to
communicate with the central control unit in cases of failure.
Finally, they should comply with existing standards and to future
projects which demand that these loads should be connected to earth.
The author's aim is to show how, using a basic concept, a family of
self-protecting switches has been developed and what the future
developments are likely to be.
