SciSearch^Ž: A Cited Reference Science Database is an international, multidisciplinary index to the literature of science, technology, biomedicine, and related disciplines produced by the Institute for Scientific Information^Ž (ISI^Ž). SciSearch contains all of the records published in the Science Citation Index^Ž (SCI^Ž), plus additional records from the Current Contents^Ž publications.

SciSearch is distinguished by some important and unique characteristics. First, journals indexed are selected on the basis of several criteria, including citation analysis, resulting in coverage of the most significant publications in the scientific, technical, and biomedical literature. Second, in addition to the more conventional retrieval methods, SciSearch offers citation indexing, which permits searching by cited references. For records added since January 1991, author abstracts, author keywords, and KeyWords Plus^TM may be searched.

SciSearch indexes all significant items (articles, review papers, meeting abstracts, letters, editorials, book reviews, correction notices, etc.) from approximately 4,500 major scientific and technical journals. Some 3,800 of these journals are further indexed by the references cited within each article, allowing for citation searching. An additional 700 journals indexed have been drawn from ISI Current Contents^Ž series of publications.

	`importance until many deaths due to mercury poisoning`
	`occurred in the 1950s. More recently, adverse health`
	`effects have been documented at relatively low exposure`
	`levels, and monitoring data must now be interpreted in`
	`this light. The Mediterranean basin has been studied in`
	`great detail over the past 20 years because of the`
	`anomalous natural presence of mercury. Marine animals of`
	`this basin have higher mercury body burdens than the`
	`same (or similar) species in the Atlantic. The mercury`
	`found in marine organisms is mainly in the form of`
	`methyl mercury. Long-term and frequent intake of seafood`
	`with high mercury levels by populations living in`
	`coastal fishing villages is associated with a toxic`
	`risk, especially in pregnant women.`
