File Description [return to top]

PASCAL is produced by the Institut de l'Information Scientifique et Technique (INIST) of the French National Research Council (CNRS). It provides access to the world's scientific and technical literature and includes about 450,000 new citations per year. Available in machine-readable form since 1973, PASCAL corresponds to the print publication Bibliographie internationale (previously Bulletin signaletique).

Each citation includes the article's original title, and, in most cases, a French translated title; for material since 1973, an English translated title is also provided. Most abstracts are in French. Analyzed documents come from all over the world, in 100 different languages. French journals are particularly well represented. The file's breakdown by language is as follows: English 63%, French 12%, Russian 10%, German 8%, and other lanuages 7%.

Controlled descriptors from a vocabulary of over 80,000 terms are provided in English, French, and, in some cases, Spanish; German descriptors are also provided in the area of metallurgy.

Subject Coverage [return to top]

PASCAL is multidisciplinary, covering the core of the world's scientific and techical literature. The principal subject areas covered are: the fundamental disciplines of physics and chemistry; life sciences (including biology, medicine, and psychology); applied sciences and technology; earth sciences; and information sciences.

In addition, a number of fields are covered exhaustively, often in cooperation with a variety of specialized research organizations. These fields are: energy; metals and metallurgy; building and public works; earth sciences; biotechnology; fundamental and applied zoology of invertebrates; agricultural sciences (specifically plant production); tropical medicine; and information science documentation.

Fields not covered by PASCAL include: nuclear physics (study of the nucleus); military applications of aeronautics and space techniques; pure mathematics; veterinary pathology (except infectious aspects); animal husbandry (since 1979); and odontology (since 1982).

Sources [return to top]

Literature of all types is abstracted in PASCAL: journal articles (about 93% of the file), theses (mainly French, 5,000 per year), conference proceedings, technical reports, books, patents (until 1980, and in biotechnology since 1983). The number of journals scanned regularly is over 8,500; 4,500 of these are abstracted completely.
