by Tom Taylor, Conference Cochair, INTELEC `98 INTELEC '98 is to be held in San Francisco, California, USA, Sunday through Thursday, October 4-8, 1998, according to Tom Taylor of the INTELEC Executive Committee. INTELEC, the International Telecommunications Energy Conference, one of three conferences sponsored by the IEEE Power Electronics Society, alternates between venues in North America and overseas. For those familiar with San Francisco, the conference site will be the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero Hotel at the end of Market Street near the end of the California Street cable car run. Over 100 excellent technical papers will be presented, along with workshops and tutorials covering telecommunications-powering issues from design through system administration. Registration will include a Tuesday afternoon excursion to Muir Woods to view the giant California Redwoods via ferry across San Francisco Bay to Sausalito. A gala banquet will be held Wednesday evening at Westin St. Francis, a beautiful historic hotel in Union Square. Spouses will be treated to a special program of events. The Hyatt Hotel will have a hospitality suite for spouses with a generous daily allowance of food and beverage. A city tour of San Francisco will take place on Monday morning, with an optional afternoon excursion to Alcatraz Penitentiary, known as "The Rock." Tuesday afternoon an excursion will be available to Muir Woods and Sausalito. A six- to seven-hour bus tour to California vineyards in Sonoma and Napa Valleys will fill the day on Wednesday. Multilingual interpreters will be available, including Japanese. For the benefit of exhibitors, approximately eighty 10-foot by 10-foot exhibitor booths will be available. Exhibitors should make note that the exhibit area has a 7-foot 10-inch ceiling throughout the exhibition space.
