PESC® '97 and How You Can Get Involved in Future Meetings

by Phil Krein, General Chair, PESC `97

The 1997 Power Electronics Specialists Conference in St. Louis, Missouri, USA was among the largest-ever PESC meetings. More than 425 attendees from dozens of nations enjoyed a week of fine mid-American hospitality. Many attendees were mystified by the subtleties of baseball when they attended the Cardinals-Cubs game as a special event, but everyone enjoyed lively discussions at technical and rap sessions. Special thanks to Art Kelley, the Program Chair, and to all the other members of the Organizing Committee. Also, special thanks to our cooperating organization, the University of Illinois, which supported a special event and provided professional administration at modest cost. PESC, APEC, or INTELEC conference work are excellent ways to get involved with the Society. If you would like to help with a future meeting, contact one of the General Chairs listed with the meeting notices, or drop a note to Bob Myers, Society Administrator, whose address is at the end of this article.

New Technical Committee

in the Works

This year, PESC'97 hosted the first Workshop on Power Conditioning and Inverter Technologies for Distributed Generation. This workshop, with primary sponsorship from the U.S. Department of Energy, brought together individuals from the fuel cell and alternative energy resource industry, the inverter and drives industries, and the electric utilities. One consensus is a need for standardization and more uniform practices to help encourage the growth of distributed generation. At present, a Technical Committee is being formed to try to address this need. If you are interested in becoming involved, please contact Dave Torrey, e-mail; torred@rpi.edu.
