PELS Chapter News

by Bill Dunford, PELS Chapters Committee Chair

We are aware of increasing interest in power electronics from Asia. At the end of last year PELS was added to a joint PES/IAS chapter in Hong Kong, under the chairmanship of Dr. Bryan Pong of Hong Kong University. I encourage any other potential chapter organizers to contact me. We offer $400 in start-up funding, plus $500 per year to support projects of benefit to members. The Distinguished Lecturer Program is also active and I can give details on how to arrange a visit.

Other societies have quite formal chapter support procedures. We are now at a stage where a more formal mechanism for interaction between chapters may be appropriate for PELS. At PESC '97 in St. Louis I will set aside a committee session to which anyone with an interest in chapter activities will be welcome. We may try to do something similar at other PELS related conferences if it seems like a useful exercise.

The PELS Chapters web page (linked from the PELS Organizations link on the main PELS web page) has not been updated for some time. I am sure that many of the officers have now been changed and some chapters may have their own pages for which links could be supplied. I would ask that all local organizers check the information on this page and e-mail updated information to me.
