Info. : André A. Jaecklin (M'70-SM'82) was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1933. He received the M.S.
and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zürich,
Switzerland, in 1958 and 1962, respectively.
From 1963 to 1967, he was associated with Ampex Corporation, Redwood City, CARISA, working on
magnetic storage problems. In 1968, he joined the Brown Boveri Research Centre in Baden, Switzerland,
where he was initially concerned with optical measuring devices. Subsequently, he started and headed
the Semiconductor Devices Group at the Research Centre working on analytical thyristor modelling and
In 1973, he transferred to the Power Semiconductor Department as Head of Basic Development. He was
involved in the conception and realizations of novel device designs such as reverse conducting
thyristors, optically fired thyristors and very high power thyristors. More recently, he was in
charge of the development of high power GTO's up to the final encapsulated device. In 1990, he returned
to ABB Corporate Research. He is also Titular Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology,
ETH, Zürich/Switzerland.
