Abstract :
The author shows how designers and specifiers of single-phasemotors can optimize
machinery operation by selecting the motor type best suited to the application. She discusses
the most frequently specified single-phase AC motors. Synchronous motors, except for
small shaded-pole units, are not covered because three-phase motors are usually selected
when ability to maintain a constant speed regardless of load is needed.
